History XX The Miss World contest was created by Eric Morley (1918-2000), British businessman and philanthropist, in 1951, Morley wanted to exploit the popularity of the newly created bikini to organize a competition of female beauty that could make the already stale shadow Miss Europe. It was given the name "International Festival Bikini", thinking it would be a unique event. The call was attended by only five international delegations from Denmark, France, Holland, Sweden and the United States, as Morley has left open invitation to British girls, who together with foreign, formed a group of 26 contestants. On 29 July 1951, at the Lyceum Ballroom, London, UK, was crowned the Swedish representative, Kirsten "Kiki" Haakanson, as the first Miss World, followed by two British. Journalists who attended the event, began to call Miss World (Miss World) to the festival, due to the participation of foreign girls, making, and inadvertently named the contest.Morley took up the name when they learned of the pregnancy of Miss Universe in 1952, thinking about a competition with this and declaring an annual contest. To promote the inclusion of participants from more conservative countries, it was decided to leave the bikini and was replaced with a bathing suit one piece. In 1959, BBC television started broadcasting the competition. Miss World has not been oblivious Dominica to the international political reality, as witnessed conflicts between Spain and the UK for possession of Gibraltar. Also, Argentina stopped sending candidates during the Falklands conflict. For some years, in 70, received two contestants from South Africa, one black and one white. Likewise, Miss World dismissed two queens in this decade. In the 80s, the contest added tests of intelligence and personality. It also adopted its current slogan "Beauty with a purpose."Since 1981 the organization creates continental queens titles which were given the best candidate from each continent, began rewarding those candidates in America, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa. From the year 1990 is merged Asia and Oceania and is delivered as Asia-Pacific, besides establishing the Caribbean Islands as the new queen continental. Before the 90, the contest came to two billion viewers in almost every country in the world. However, competition has been seen as somewhat outdated and politically incorrect (mainly by the warring British feminist groups) in his native Britain before it, the event was a tradition in London, but was pushed into exile in the UK several years. Despite the global demand, the show was not broadcast on any major British TV network for several years until it was broadcasted on Channel Five 1998.
