Hundreds of species of medicinal and aromatic plants are threatened with extinction, which will limit the use of drugs formed by these species and the discovery of new treatments, a study of the International Organization for Botanic Gardens (BGCI), with based in London. The body, composed of 600 members representing botanic gardens in 120 countries, estimated that the discovery of cures for diseases like AIDS or cancer could be delayed and that medication use is limited because more than 50 of these originating from plants and trees in danger of disappearing.
