Avicenna, or Ibn Sina (as was called in Persian), was born on August 7, 980 in Afshana (province of Khorasan, now in Uzbekistan), near Bukhara. His parents were Muslims. He was sent to study calculation with a merchant, al-Natili. Had a good memory and could recite the entire Qur'an. When his father was appointed an official, accompanied him to Bokhara, then capital of the Samani, and there studied knowledge of the era, such as physics, mathematics, philosophy, the Koran or logic. Was influenced by a treaty of al-Farabi, which allowed him to overcome the difficulties encountered in the study of Aristotle's Metaphysics.This precocity in the studies was also reflected in a precocity in the race, as at sixteen and went to famous doctors and seventeen, already had a reputation as a doctor to save the life of Amir Mansur ibn Nuh. With these books, his fame as a writer, philosopher, physician and astronomer spread throughout Persia, where he traveled. In 1021, the death of Prince Shams o-dowleh and the beginning of the reign of his son-Sama or crystallized dowleh ambitions and resentments. Victim of political intrigues Avicenna went to jail. Thirty-two he began his masterpiece, the celebrated Canon of Medicine (translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona), which contains the organized collection of medical and pharmaceutical knowledge of his time in five volumes.During an expion to Hamadan in modern Iran, the philosopher suffered a severe intestinal crisis, suffering a long time and it made, they said, by overwork and pleasure. He tried to heal itself but it was fatal remedy. He died at fifty-seven years in August 1037, after having led a hectic life full of vicissitudes, exhausted by overwork.
